The only change I might suggest for this site is that I prefer to make sure there is a heading in a header element (although it isn’t mandatory). So I’d move the h1 out of the first section and have it in the page header.

Hmm…I don’t think it’s necessary to have a heading in a header. Does it say this in the spec somewhere?
No you’re right it doesn’t need to have a heading (as mentioned in the post) but I think this would help with the document outline.
I think a nav tag in footer would be fine!
