It’s nice to see Edgar’s portfolio items marked up using the article element rather than div or li, both of which are very common. The article is much more semantic and Edgar shows a good understanding of when it can be used.

Edgar’s use of the header element is unnecessary when it’s only content is a heading, but it’s not wrong by any means. Similarly the nested section in the portfolio items would probably be better as a div, or else given a heading.

This is a very simple site that uses the HTML5 doctype, shortened charset declaration and a couple of new elements. The photos don’t need to be in a section as they are not a sub-section of the document, they are the main content. However, kudos for usingsmall in the footer, and a nice reminder that you don’t need to do much to start using HTML5 today.

It’s a fairly simple site with clean markup, and Lukas has paid attention to how headings and sectioning content should be used. Perhaps he could have used a section for the portfolio pieces with each one in an article, but it’s fine the way it is too.

One thing I would change is to put the contact details and form into a section and make the footer much smaller, only containing the content that appears in a light bar at the bottom.

The section element is sometimes being used for styling purposes only, so a div would be more appropriate. The time element could be used to enclose the blog post dates.

Lindsey’s site is well structured, making use of some new HTML5 elements such as header, nav, section, article and footer. There is one untitled section used to contain the main content which would be better as a div, and time with the pubdate attribute would be a better choice for marking up the blog posts’ published dates. Otherwise a pretty nice HTML5 site.

The h1 doesn’t need to be contained within a hgroup as it’s on its own, and the same goes for the single h1 elements contained within a header. There are also a number of section elements being used as styling containers where div elements would be more appropriate. The article elements in the left aside don’t make semantic sense, and a div would have sufficed.
