Mat uses new HTML5 elements to mark up his site, and has paid attention to the document outline. There are a couple of places hgroup could have been used, for example round the “Work” and “(selection)” headings. As things stand “(selection”) is at the same heading level as all the portfolio items.

It would also make a lot of sense to use articles for each portfolio item. In an HTML5 tutorial these could be held up as perfect examples of articles.
